The Garden of Forking Paths

The Garden of Forking Paths

This is a verbal fractal based on the text below. The title is taken from a story by Jorge Luis Borges, El Jardín De Senderos Que Se Bifurcan.

The roads not
taken beckon
and I find
myself in
different minds.
To stay secure
in comfort,
I continue
on the well-
worn track.
I opt for
change, to
leap aside and
wildly take a
different tack.

The program which constructed this design was written in Visual Basic.

The underlying fractal uses a standard "branching tree" algorithm. The difficulty in constructing it lay in the necessity for all the text to line up: the natural process would have led to a 90° rotation of the text at each branch.

I designed a line-draw font so that the text could be repeated at any angle and any compression.
